Steven Knight expresses excitement about penning the script for the upcoming James Bond film, saying he “can’t wait” to get started

Steven Knight Set to Write Next James Bond Film, Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Steven Knight, acclaimed creator of Peaky Blinders, has officially been tapped to pen the script for the next installment in the James Bond franchise, Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed. The upcoming film is currently in development and marks a new chapter for the iconic spy series, following the departure of longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson earlier this year.

The film will be directed by Dune and Blade Runner 2049 visionary Denis Villeneuve, signaling a bold creative shift for the franchise.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Knight shared his excitement about taking on the high-profile project.

“It’s always been on my bucket list,” he said. “To be invited to write a Bond film is fantastic—I can’t wait to get started. I’ve been a fan for so many years. I hope that passion is embedded in me enough to create something familiar yet fresh—stronger, bolder, and better.”

While Knight didn’t reveal any details about who will portray the next 007, speculation continues to swirl. Since Daniel Craig exited the role after 2021’s No Time to Die, several names have been floated as potential successors, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, James Norton, and Irish rising star Paul Mescal. When asked, Knight responded coyly,

“That’s a very, very good question—and one I can’t answer.”

Whether he’s being discreet or genuinely doesn’t know yet remains unclear.

Knight is best known for creating the BAFTA-winning drama Peaky Blinders, starring Cillian Murphy, which ran for six acclaimed seasons and is currently being adapted into a Netflix film. He has also received widespread recognition for his screenwriting work, including an Oscar nomination for Dirty Pretty Things (2004), as well as writing Spencer (2021), the critically acclaimed biopic of Princess Diana starring Kristen Stewart.

In 2024, Knight premiered This Town, a BBC One drama set in 1970s and ’80s Coventry, which won a Royal Television Society Award.

The process that led to Knight's Bond hire began with a surprise meeting.

“I was invited to meet with [producer] Amy Pascal, and I didn’t know what it was about,” Knight explained. “It quickly became clear—and I was thrilled. From there, it was a series of meetings and discussions, and then eventually I got the call.”

Acknowledging the immense pressure of working on such a storied franchise, Knight remained grounded.

“You’ve just got to do what you do, and do it as well as you can.”

The upcoming Bond film is being produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman. According to industry insiders, including Variety, a release window around 2028 is likely.

As fans eagerly await more updates—including casting news and plot details—Knight’s involvement signals a creative evolution for James Bond, blending classic espionage thrills with fresh storytelling from one of Britain’s most celebrated screenwriters.
